Maentwrog
The
village of Maentwrog nestles on the side of the Vale of Ffestiniog
about half way between Penrhyndeudraeth and Blaenau Ffestiniog.
The village we see today has changes very little in the last
100 or so years. Built as the estate village by the Oakeley
family of Plas Tan y Bwlch, the imposing mansion can be seen
on the opposite side of the valley.
In
the church yard stands the stone from where the village gets
its name, legend says it was hurled by the mighty giant Twrog.
Riverside walks lead from the village following the meander
of Afon Dwyryd. The meander is not a natural feature, it was
created by the estate owners in the 1800s to give a more visually
appealing view from their house.
